On March 9, 2012 three brothers Ervin, Amado and Daniel Cruz of the Belize Bank Bulldog Team set out to paddle their way to victory in the longest race of its kind in Central America. La Ruta Maya River Challenge is a gruelling four day canoe race with paddlers battling heat, sun, rapids and winds along 176 miles of the Belize River. The race starts at the Hawksworth Bridge in San Ignacio Cayo and ends at the Belcan Bridge in Belize City with stops at Banana Bank Lodge, Double Head Cabbage and Burrell Boom along the way.
Competing against over 70 other teams from all over the country and worldwide, our very own Bulldogs Team completed the race first, setting a new record of 16 hours, 36 minutes and 3 seconds. Coming in second place with a time of 16 hours, 37 minutes and 52 seconds was The Oceana Wavemakers, and third place went to NICH, who finished in 16 hours, 42 minutes and 44 seconds.
We would like to congratulate the Bulldogs team, Elvin, Amado and Daniel Cruz, as well as their manager Gerard Martinez for all of their hard work and dedication. Special thanks also goes out to Mrs. Penny Alfaro and the San Ignacio branch team who assisted in the preparations and organizing the logistics.
A big thank you also goes out to those who came out to support and cheer on the team to victory.
