San Pedro - September Celebrations 2006
Celebrated under the theme “A Nation Alive, A People With Pride, Belize At 25!”, this year’s September Celebrations brought together zealous Belizeans from all over the country, celebrating two significant events in Belize’s history; namely, the Battle of St. George’s Caye (September 10 th) and Independence Day (September 21 st). San Pedro was no exception as the islanders enthusiastically exhibited that national pride was very much alive and kicking in La Isla Bonita.
The culmination on the 21 st saw one of the biggest Independence Day parades ever on the island. Hundreds of spectators lined the streets to view the parade, marching bands, colorful costumes, and fantastic floats passing by in a brilliant variety of shapes, colors, and sounds.
A crowd favorite in the parade was the float showcasing all the past Miss San Pedro queens since our first Independence in 1981. Belize Bank was thrilled to have four of their staff on this float! Flor Nunez won the title of Miss San Pedro in 1986, Ivette Graniel won in 1990, Vanya Nunez in 1997 and Delia Tzib was crowned Miss San Pedro in 1999.
The success of celebrations on Belize’s 25 th birthday was a historical event in itself and perhaps like a rainbow of our culture, citizens, and country, it is a promise that this proud tradition will continue to flourish with pride.
