In-Store POS Acceptance (Debit & Credit Cards)

Quick Steps – How to Accept a Card Payment

  • Enter the transaction amount on the POS terminal.

  • Ask the customer to insert, tap, or swipe their card:

    • Chip & PIN – insert, and follow prompts.

    • Contactless – tap the card or phone on the reader.

  • The customer enters the PIN or signs, if required.

  • The terminal authorizes the payment in seconds.

  • Print or send a digital receipt (where available).

Tip: Always confirm the transaction amount with the customer before you press ENTER.

Best Practices for Cashiers & Front-Line Staff

  • Always verify the card and check the last 4 digits on the receipt.

  • Never write down PINs or allow anyone else to enter them for the customer.

  • If the card is declined, remain calm and say:

    • "This transaction did not go through. Would you like to try again or use another payment method?”

  • For refunds, follow your internal policy and process through the POS using the original payment method.

Partial Authorization

Sometimes a customer’s card does not have enough available funds for the full amount. Instead of declining the transaction, Partial Authorization helps you capture what is available.

How it works:

  • You enter the full transaction amount.

  • The bank responds with an approved lower amount (e.g., a customer has BZD 70 available for a BZD 100 purchase).

  • The terminal displays the approved amount and prompts you to continue.

  • You inform the customer and say:

    • “Your card approved BZD 70. You can pay the remaining BZD 30 in cash or another method.”

This feature helps you save sales instead of losing them to a full decline.
